Birding in Manitoba, Canada is a year round activity. Because many of the lakes, rivers and wetlands in Manitoba are located on bird migration routes, the birding activity is best enjoyed during the spring and fall migration seasons.

Birdwatching destinations vary in Manitoba, Canada. Many sites are designated as parks, sanctuaries, preserves and wildlife management areas. Western Region Birding:

Turtle Mountain Provincial Park located near the community of Brandon. The Turtle Mountain Park is a protected WMA (Wildlife Management Area). And near Boissevain, Manitoba is Whitewater Lake. Whitewater Lake is recognized as a Canadian Important Bird Area (IBA), a Manitoba Wildlife Management Area (WMA) and a Manitoba Heritage Marsh.

Parkland Region Birdwatching:

At Riding Mountain National Park near Dauphin there have been over 260+ bird species sighted. The Duck Mountain Provincial Park and the Porcupine Provincial Forests are birding sites located near Swan River, Manitoba. Both are popular nesting, feeding and resting destinations for resident and migrating birds.

Some of the birds sighted in the region include the Sandhill Crane, Prairie Horned Lark, American White Pelican, Great Blue Heron, Belted Kingfisher, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and various species of owls and ducks.

Central Region Birding:

Big Grass Marsh near Gladstone, Manitoba and the Delta Marsh near Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. Popular bird species include the American White Pelican, Great Blue Heron, Piping Plover, sandpiper, White-throated Sparrow, American Redstart, Least Flycatcher and Tennessee Warblers.

Pembina Valley Birdwatching:

Near Morden, Manitoba. There have been over 200+ bird species recorded in the region. Bird sightings include songbirds, waterfowl and predator birds like Golden Eagles, Bald Eagles, Red-tailed hawks, warblers, woodpeckers, flycatchers, blue jays, towhees, vultures, vireos and chickadees.

Interlake Region Birding:

Camp Morton Provincial Park and the Hecla/Grindstone Provincial Park located near Gimli, Manitoba. And closer to Selkirk, Manitoba is the Birds Hill Provincial Park and the Oak Hammock Marsh. Lake Winnipeg, near the Camp Morton Provincial Park is a large gathering of white pelicans. In Birds Hill Park there are over 200+ bird species sighted like the Horned Lark, Indigo Bunting, Clay-Colored Sparrow, Red-tailed Hawks, Goshawks, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Hairy Woodpeckers.

The Hecla/Grindstone Provincial Park and Oak Hammock Marsh are more developed birding sites equipped with bird blinds, lookout towers, information signs, viewpoints, sightseeing benches and viewing telescopes. These two birding destinations offer exceptional birding.

There are said to be over 300+ bird species sighted in the region. Some of the bird sightings include the Snowy Owl, Short Eared Owl, Great Gray Owl, Bald Eagle, Cooper's Hawk, Ferruginous Hawk, Gyrfalcon, Tundra Swan, Northern Harrier, American White Pelican, Canada Goose, Great Blue Heron, Common Loon, Piping Plover, Least Sandpiper, Bohemian Waxwing, Red-winged Blackbird and the American Goldfinch.

Northern Region Birdwatching:

Popular birdwatching destinations include the Saskeram Provincial Wildlife Management Area, the Clearwater Lake Provincial Park and the Grass River Provincial Park located near The Pas, Manitoba. The Wapusk National Park located south of Churchill, Manitoba is a protected birding site vital for many migratory birds.

Some of the birds to look out for while exploring the north include Tundra Swans, Willow Ptarmigans, Snow Geese, Great Grey Owls, Short-Eared Owls, Boreal Owls, Red-necked Phalaropes, Arctic Terns, Semi-palmate Plovers, Little Gulls, Common Eider, Northern Shoveler, Sandhill Crane, Red-breasted Merganser, Gyrfalcon and Peregrine Falcon.
