Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Canada is a resource town and a year round recreation destination located in the Wilderness Region of Northeastern Ontario situated next to the Ontario/Quebec border. Surrounding the community are kettle lakes, Boreal Forest and the small towns of Swastika, Chaput Hughes, Charlton, James, Englehart, Larder Lake, Goodfish Lake, Matachewan and McGarry. The kettle lakes were created during the last Ice Age by retreating glaciers. The boreal forests are home to a mix-match of northern trees including trembling aspen, jack pine, white birch, balsam fir and black and white spruce.
Because of industry the community of Kirkland Lake enjoys many of the services important to travelers including accommodations (motels, Inns, bed and breakfasts, wilderness lodges, cottages, campgrounds) and restaurants, tours, guides, outfitters, attractions, pubs and transportation services (bus, taxi, airport, car rental).
History too is on display in town. There are sites to visit like the Museum of Northern History, Hockey Heritage Exhibition Centre, Toburn Mine and the Miner's Memorial Monument. Every year the community hosts events which attract locals and visitors to the region like like drag races, winter carnivals and adventure races.
Summer adventures and activities enjoyed in the region include canoeing, mountain biking, hunting, camping, golfing, swimming, kayaking and fishing for trout, northern pike and walleye. In the winter months activities enjoyed in the region include snowmobiling, downhill skiing, snowboarding, xc skiing and ice fishing.
Being that the area is set in a wilderness setting there are many opportunities for wildlife sightings. Most popular wildlife sightings include moose, wolf, bear, beaver, otter, lynx and many bird species including hawks, loons and great blue herons.
