Fort Steele Heritage Town - Cranbrook

Fort Steele Town is a large heritage village situated on the banks of the Kootenay River and backed by the looming Rocky Mountains. The very popular heritage town is located northeast of the community of Cranbrook, BC in the East Kootenay Region of British Columbia, Canada.

Fort Steele Heritage Town is a step back in time. The site is one of the larger heritage town attractions in British Columbia. And there are many. The big appeal of the Fort Steele Town attraction is the abundance of activity, the historic buildings and the friendly pioneer actors.

Spread out over 12 acres, the town is full of restored and original buildings dating back to the 1890's. These historic buildings line the pedestrian boardwalk paths and gravel streets of the town. These same streets connect together to form a loop route in the shape of a square. In the centre of the square is a large grass field with a bandstand.

The town is busy with activity as period actors, both young and old, are dressed in pioneer and settler clothing walking the streets. Some pioneer actors operate the shops and stores in the village while others provide the entertainment. The town is a working pioneer settlement.

The actors, the atmosphere, the scenery and the architecture all play a big part in making the Fort Steele experience a memorable one. It is a heritage village full of pioneer actors providing real-life adventures for those who enjoy a taste of BC, Canada history.

Some of the shows and activities enjoyed at Fort Steele include live theatre, horse rides, train rides, blacksmith demonstration, wagon tours, gold-panning, street theatre and gossip interpretive tours with actors dressed as pioneers.

There are over 60 different structures in Fort Steele. Some of the historical and reconstructed buildings at Fort Steele include the Wild Horse Theatre, Post Office, Stage Coach Office, Geary & Doyles Livery Stable, Barr & Comb's Blacksmith Shop, Pioneer Barber Shop, Carlin & Durick General Store, Nugget Norm's Gold Panning Co., Telegraph Office, Old City Bakery, St. Anthony's Catholic Church, School House, Perry Creek Waterwheel, Coventry Opera House and Railway Station.
