Along the border of Alberta and Montana just east of Waterton Lakes National Park you'll find the Police Outpost Provincial Park. This park has a wonderful no service campground with 46 sites available by online reservation only open from May until October.
Firewood is available from the campground host. Washrooms are pit toilets with no running water. It is suggested to bring your own toilet paper, just in case. Campsites can accommodate large trailers claiming up to 60' in some sites. The sites themselves are mostly gravel with a few showing some grass patches. Every single site is well treed, private and provides shade on those hot summer days.
The lake is about a 5 minute walk from the campground in the Police Outpost Provincial Park, depending what site you're at. There is a boat launch and a good size parking lot just pass the entrance road to the campground. Max boat speed on this lake is 12km/h. It's a nice quiet slow paced lake ideal for trout fishing. Everything is very well signed in this park.
The boat launch is where you'll find the trail head for the lake trail that takes you to a boardwalk and an island along an amazing easy stroller friendly trail that offers plenty of shade in the hot sun. Stop along the trail on the many lakeside benches which offer beautiful views of Outpost Lake and Chief Mountain. If you like geocaching, you'll find some along this path.
Birds, bears and deer are very common in this area, along with many other species of wildlife. Fishing is open from April 1 to October 31, no bait allowed (Bait Ban), with a limit of 1 trout over 50cm. You'll find Rainbow Trout in Outpost Lake.
The park offers great views of Chief Mountain in Montana and has a trail along the southern part of the park leading you right to the Canadian American boarder. You'll know you're there because there is a monument marking the line between the 2 countries as well as a big sign telling you to stay in Canada with a large camera watching you. The border has a small farmers fence that runs along it in this area. You'll be rewarded by amazing views and wildflowers along your path. This trail does a full loop back to the boat launch parking lot.
"It's a small lovely park to avoid the big crowds and enjoy some peace and quiet in nature."
