Beauvais Lake Provincial Park is a hidden gem in the Crown of the Continent – the name given to an area where the corners of Alberta, British Columbia and Montana collide. Beauvais Lake is 20-minute drive from the town of Pincher Creek, about two hours from Calgary and close to an hour from both Lethbridge and Waterton Lakes National Park.
The Crown of the Continent is an area spanning 73,000 square kilometres full of exciting scenery and a surprising diversity of plant and animal life. Therefore Beauvais Lake is a tiny 11.6 sq km jewel in the crown, sparkling brightly in the mixing zone between the native prairie grasslands and Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. It is where rare plants and abundant wildlife can be found.
Settlers homesteaded in the area in the late 1800s. Consequently private cottages still exist along the eastern lakeshore. Today’s campers and day trippers can appreciate the park’s history through interpretive signage. Hike beyond historic homesteads for spectacular views of both the Castle Wilderness and Alberta’s prairie landscape on more than 30 kilometres of trails.
Over 180 species of birds have been observed in Beauvais Lake Provincial Park including 7 different species of owls. The lake is an important staging and nesting area for ducks, geese, swans and other birds. It also provides recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating and swimming.
The Beauvais Lake Provincial Park campground includes 53 power and 34 basic service sites available either by reservation or first come, first serve. In addition a group camp and 10 walk-in tent sites are also available. By the same token fifteen sites are available for winter camping on a first-come, first-served basis. Note: firewood is not available within the park. The pay-to-use RV dump station operates only in the summer season.
