Ocean Kayaking. There are many places to visit on Galiano Island by kayak. There are kayak days trips exploring Retreat Cove, Montague Harbour, Gray Peninsula, Spotlight Cove, Coon Bay, Lighthouse Bay, Whaler Bay, Ballingall Islets, Gossip Island, Georgeson Bay and Parker Island.

Boating & Sailing. There are coves and bay with open water moorage on Galiano and there is a marina with services in Montague Harbour. Some stay for awhile and explore while others are on a schedule exploring the Southern Gulf Islands or San Juan Islands or the Princess Margaret Marine Park.

Beachcombing. Galiano Island has sandy and pebbled beaches. Some of the beaches are old middens sites with crushed shells covering sections of the coastline. There are beaches in Coon Bay, Montague Harbour, Retreat Cove and Georgeson Bay.

Birdwatching. Birdwatching on Galiano includes predator birds and sea birds. Some of the birding parks include Georgeson Bay, Bluffs Park and Dionisio Point Park.

Kayaking. Kayaking in the region is very popular because of the many coves, bays, islands and islets to explore. Some of the Denman Island kayak destinations include Sandy Island Provincial Marine Park and Boyle Point Regional Park.

Scuba Diving. Diving is big in this region around Hornby and Denman Island. Some of the Denman diving sites most visited include the south end of Lambert Channel and the Sandy Island Marine Park. Flora Islet near Hornby Island is where the scuba divers head to swim with the six-gill sharks.

Boating & Sailing. Boating and sailing the waters around Denman Island includes views of jagged coastlines, bluffs and sandy beaches. There are a few destinations to visit near the island including Sandy Island and Chrome Island.

Beachcombing. No visit to Denman Island is complete without exploring the beaches. Some beaches are developed as parks while others are developed as access points to marine views. Fillongley Park has a good public beach. Plenty of beach around for picnics.

Hiking. There are a few good short hikes on the island. Boyle Point Provincial Park has a great trail leading to a bluff and great views of the sound and a lighthouse.

Top 8 Things To Do in Alert Bay on Cormorant Island, Northern Gulf Islands located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Traditional Big House: The Big House is a large traditional building used for Potlatches. The Big House was first built in 1965 and then was expanded in 1987. During this time a Namgis artist named Doug Cranmer repainted the Big House. But, sadly, in 1997 the traditional building was lost to a fire. In 1999 the Big House was rebuilt keeping with the traditions of the Kwakwaka'wakw First Nation's people.

World's Largest Totem Pole. On Cormorant Island is a 173 foot tall Totem Pole carved by 6 Kwakwaka'wakw First Nation people. Some of the carved figures on the Totem Pole include the Sun Man which is the crest of the Quatsino Tribe; Kolus ( a Thunderbird cousin ) represents the Kwagul Tribe; a whale representing the Gwa'sala'Nakwaxda'xw and others like a bear holding a salmon; a wolf, a raven,a Dzunukwa embracing a copper and much more.

Alert Bay Museum: An assortment of over 6900 pictures depicting the history of Alert Bay on Cormorant Island. There are historical pictures of the Kwakwaka'wakw First Nation's people dating back to the late 1800s.

Whale Watching: Killer Whales, (Orcas) can be seen from Bere Point and surrounding waters. Many Orcas visit Bere Point because it is a popular rubbing rock. Michael Bigg's Ecological Reserve, nearby is a launching point for whale watching and fantastic wildlife viewing. Located at Robson Bight. Also Paul Spong's Orca Lab is a famous marine biologist who studies Killer Whales in the region. Access by boat on Hanson Island. Must book prior to arrival for acceptance on or near premises.

Some of the highlight beaches include Long Beach, Wickaninnish Beach, Chesterman Beach, MacKenzie Beach, South Beach and Combers Beach.

Hiking Trails

The hiking trails in the Tofino and Ucluelet area allow you to explore vast expansive ocean coastlines, wetland bogs, sandy beaches and rainforests. The trails connect to amazing viewpoints, old growth forests, long beaches, lighthouses, bogs and wildlife viewing opportunities. Some of the must-do hikes include the Wild Pacific Trail, Rainforest Trail, Nuu-chah-nulth Trail and the Shorepine Bog Trail.

Sightsee

Victoria, BC is a popular destination for sightseeing on foot, bike, water taxi, vehicle, bus and horse carriage. Many shopping districts, parks, and sightseeing attractions are within distance form each other. Suggest start all sightseeing from the Inner Harbour. 

History Education

Visit a historic attraction and/or museum when in the City of Victoria and learn more about the history of the region. There are historic castles, heritage lighthouses, forts, Museums and so much more. Some of our favorites include the Royal British Columbia Museum, Emily Carr House, Craigdarroch Castle, Fisgard Lighthouse and Fort Rodd Hill Historic Site. 

Bike Paths & Trails

Bring a bike. Victoria is very bike friendly and many locals bike to and from everything. Bikes are great for visiting city parks, touring the wilderness trails in nature parks and for exploring some of the paved biking trails which connect communities and attractions. No bike, no worries. There are bike rental companies in the city as well.

Smell the Roses

Victoria is the City of Gardens in so many ways. There are many parks within city limits which have extraordinary gardens - non better than Beacon Hill Park which is walking distance form downtown. If you like paying an admission for some garden love than you can make a trip out to Brentwood and visit the Butchart Gardens.

Go Fishing:

The world famous Gerrard Rainbow trout plus some Kokanee salmon and dolly varden bite fishing lures on the local lakes. Bring your boat and your gear. Or book some time with a local fishing guide.

Visit a Spa:

When the boys of the family are out doing the "guy" thing playing golf, fishing, etc. it may be a good time for the ladies of the group to treat themselves to a day of pampering with a local spa. 

Kayak Tours:

Being near Kootenay Lake and the whitewater rapids of the Slocan River provides an opportunity to discover the joys of kayaking. Slow and steady on lakes or fast and wet on the river. Wildlife Tours:

Self guided hiking tours or while on a guided kayak, plane, raft or boat tour one will often visit popular wildlife viewing areas in the backcountry around Nelson and the Slocan Valley. One may even see black bears and grizzly. (parks & trails)

Ferry Camping:

Proctor - only accessed via Kootenay Lake Ferry. Explore Proctor Falls, a pictograph site and the Irvine Creek, Narrows Creek, Mill Lake and Lasca Creek Trails. Most have wilderness campsites for overnight camping.

River Rafting:

Feeling a need for a white water rafting experience? The Slocan River awaits for your arrival. Go for a day of white water fun or book an overnight adventure. Tours with guides and lessons available. (tours contact list)

History Lesson:

Walking history in Nelson is easy on foot while doing your chores or shopping in heritage buildings like the Bank of Commerce (1907), Capitol Theatre (1924), Bank of Montreal (1899), Post office (1902) and the Nelson Daily News (1899).

Mountain Biking:

Nelson and the Slocan Valley has everything for a mountain biker. Bring your own bike or sign up for a tour or contact a local club. You cannot help but have fun with trail names like Cemetery, Slabalanche, Shitaker, Hitman, Doz Slabs, Honey, Buddha, Kut Korners and 49er. (parks & trails)

Walking Tour:

When in Nelson you must make time to walk the waterfront path in Lakeside Park. It is a paved wheelchair and baby stroller friendly path with sightseeing benches, picnic tables, flower gardens and viewing areas providing great views of Kootenay Lake and Nelson. (parks & trails)

Explore Trails:

The protected parks, as well as, the wilderness backcountry areas near Nelson and in the Slocan Valley provide a smorgasbord of fantastic wilderness trails for hiking and backpacking. For example there are over 100+ kilometres of wilderness trails in the Kokanee Glacier Park alone. (parks & trails)

Putt, Chip & Drive:

Bring your golf clubs when visiting the region. There are plenty of putting greens and driving fairways to go around. No clubs. Golf courses provide rentals and golf carts.

Road Trip:

The beauty about the Kootenays is that everything is nearby and communities are close. There are too many day trips to list. While in Nelson drive out to the Hot Springs (Ainsworth and Nakusp) or hop the ferry in Balfour and visit the Pilot Bay Lighthouse (Crawford Bay) or visit the tourism villages in the Slocan Valley.

Pack a Picnic:

When the weather is nice we all love a good picnic. Why stay inside when you can dine in the outdoors. Pack up your family for a picnic in the park at one of the many in the region. (parks & trails)

Ski Mountains:

The Kootenay region of British Columbia enjoys many downhill skiing & snowboarding mountain resorts and cat skiing and heli skiing operators. (winter contact list)

Ski XC:

Bring your cross country skis and explore the trails in some of the parks or nordic areas like Apex Busk or the Clearwater Creek XC Ski Trails.

Go Sledding:

There are snowmobile operators in the Kootenays who provide snowmobile tours or can set you up with a rental. In the backcountry near Nelson there are designated areas for snowmobiling called the Kokanee Snowmobile Trails.
