It was truly an honour to sit down and talk with Kasey Wycotte and hear his life story on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Although only 15 years old, Kasey has done more things than most adults have in such a short time. At the age of six, Kasey asked his parents if he could join a martial arts gym in Merritt BC Canada. Although the gym closed down, Kasey with his father would drive to Kamloops 3-4 times a week in order pursue his love for martial arts. Focusing on his professional development, and specific goals like competing at a higher level, Kasey then started to travel to Kelowna BC because training partners play a crucial role in BJJ development. Lacking training partners at a high skill level is not challenging. In order to reach his goals, Kasey overcame various obstacles. Kasey inspires and reaffirms how the power of hard work, determination, and perseverance leads to positive outcomes.
Competing in national or international Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) tournaments can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it also comes with costs and considerations. Some of these costs and expenses are hotels, registration fees, food, travel, gear, and sometimes passports. Albeit there seems to be little support for kids who want to enter, train, compete in national or international competitions. Potential sources of support may come from sponsors, community, fundraising, or parents. Moreover, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu lifestyle includes various techniques, history, culture, and training. Community and camaraderie runs deep with support and being part of a team is a top philosophy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Merritt BC Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is truly a lifestyle, passion, with self determination for Kasey Wycotte. Although Kasey is only fifteen, he has competed in hundreds of tournaments and competitions. For example Kasey was selected to represent British Columbia in the North American Indigenous Games in Halifax Novia Scotia 2023. Moreover, he has competed in Calgary, Nevada, California, Germany, and countless other competitions for wresting, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and more. In addition, Kasey's belt ranking is green, he will receive his blue belt when he turns sixteen. It is not hard to see how Kasey is focused on reaching his goals, giving and helping to contribute to his community, having a passion to teach other kids Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Kasey and his father would like to hold competitions in Merritt at their gym 'Adelphi Grappling' Bringing awareness to this martial art as well the benefits of tourism to the Nicola Valley.
